Bridging the Gap
Bridging the Gap

Carol Schechter, MA, MPH
Stanton Brunner, MBA

At AED we have the privilege of working with communities across the country actively engaged in bridging the divide between research and practice. We have documented some of these experiences in the publication: Bridging the Gap Between Public Health Research and Practice: Lessons from the Field.

This paper presents three case studies based on current programs, each illustrating successes and continuing challenges associated with the research-to-practice continuum:

  • Media Smart Youth demonstrates the value of participatory research for successful intervention design;
  • Heads Up: Brain Injury in Your Practice highlights the merits of applying sound marketing and communication principles to materials design and dissemination;
  • SchoolFood Plus illustrates the complexities and benefits of organizational partnerships; and

Each case study moves through a background statement on the specific public health issue, a description of the project together with challenges associated with moving from research to practice, and a presentation of tactics that successfully negotiated the specific challenges at hand.
