Elyse provides programmatic and research support for a wide variety of health communication projects. She works on the Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s National Institute for Child Health and Human Development’s (NICHD) "Media-Smart Youth: Eat, Think, and Be Active!," program, an after-school curriculum for youth ages 11-13 that teaches “tweens” to make healthier choices, analyze media messages, and understand the connection between media and their health. She works on the development and implementation of the curriculum, the creation of a “train-the-trainers” guide, and conducts Media-Smart Youth trainings around the country and in conjunction with We Can! Regional Trainings. She previously supported community outreach to over 300 communities for the National Institute of Health’s We Can! program, addressing childhood overweight and obesity. Ms. Cohen also provides programmatic support for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) “Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports” tool kit, developing and testing program materials, establishing national and local partnerships, and promoting and disseminating the tool kit through media and other distribution channels. Ms. Cohen also works on CDC’s shaken baby syndrome prevention initiative, providing programmatic, logistical, and research support.
Prior to working at AED, Ms. Cohen served as a research assistant for the National Institute of Health’s research study on “The Treatment of Obesity in Underserved Rural Settings”. Ms. Cohen assisted in the development of project materials, conducted in-depth interviews of potential participants, and provided support for on-site screenings of participants. Ms. Cohen received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Florida and is currently completing her master’s degree in public health communication and marketing at George Washington University. |
