Derek is a certified health education specialist with expertise in formative and qualitative research, including the development of research tools and instruments, collection and analysis of data, and reporting of research findings. His work spans the spectrum of the Center’s subject areas, including immunization, traumatic brain injury, STD prevention, and emergency medical services. Derek’s work includes organizing focus groups, in-depth interviews, surveys, and other research activities needed to support the Center’s health communication activities. He is also responsible for analyzing and reporting the data gathered from this research. Examples of other research conducted for the Center have included literature reviews, media content analyses, and environmental scans. Derek has also guided several research projects through the IRB and OMB processes.
Prior to joining AED, Derek worked for a large Maryland-based consulting firm where he was a formative research coordinator. He supported a large contract with the National Cancer Institute, and worked closely with clients to produce materials for cancer patients, caregivers, and health professionals. His work centered on developing materials for adolescents affected by cancer and for cancer patients with limited literacy skills. In addition, he organized expert advisory panels and established partnerships with advocacy groups. Derek has also worked at two universities, where he developed substance abuse prevention programs. Derek holds a master’s degree in behavioral sciences and health education from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. He has a bachelor’s degree in environmental toxicology from the University of California, Davis.
